ANTELOPE VALLEY EMERGENCY MEDICAL ASSOCIATES
Antelope Valley Emergency Medical Associates (AVEMA) at the Antelope Valley Medical Center Emergency Department (AVMC ED) is recognized nationally as a leader in innovation and quality in emergency medical care.
AVMC is a public, non-profit hospital in Lancaster, CA. With over 130,000 annual visits, we are in the top ten busiest EDs in the entire nation. We are a Level 2 trauma center, stroke center, STEMI center, EDAP, and a chest pain center. In stoke and STEMI care, we are frequently ranked #1 in LA County quality metrics. Our multi-specialty call panel is available 24/7. Our patients are often challenged by low income and poor health, giving us the opportunity to care for a population most in need of our help.
The physician group at AVH ED is a highly stable, independent, physician owned group that has staffed the department for over 40 years.
More than 30 years ago, we pioneered the use of scribes in the ED. Every AVEMA provider, including NPs and PAs, has the assistance of a scribe on shift. We were one of the first groups to recognize the essential role of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) in the ED, where they have the opportunity to care for a broad range of patients, not just simple runny noses in triage.
Scribes work one-on-one alongside our providers and gain experience that is excellent preparation for pre-medical, pre-nursing, and other healthcare careers.
The ED at AVH is a major teaching center. Based on AVEMA's reputation, as well as the volume and quality of medicine available in our ED, we were chosen by UCLA as the only community training site for the UCLA emergency medicine physician residency program, where residents train daily, and have for the over 15 years. We are also a community-training site for UCLA NPs, USC PAs, and AV College Nurses and Paramedic students. Most physicians in our group have faculty appointments at UCLA.
